2025 marks the 60th anniversary of Singapore’s independence, and a range of celebratory events and activities have been planned to mark the occasion. While the country reflects on its past and present, there will also be a special focus on the future—specifically, the younger generation.
Indranee Rajah, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, announced that a special gift is being planned for babies born in 2025, in honor of Singapore’s milestone year. In a Facebook post on November 5, 2024, she emphasized the importance of marriage and parenthood in ensuring Singapore’s continued success.
“As we enter our 60th year of nationhood, we are planning a special gift for SG60 babies next year,” Indranee wrote. “For Singapore to remain strong and thrive in the years to come, we will need more Singaporean families and, of course, more Singaporean babies to write the next chapter of our Singapore story.”
However, the details of the gift remain a mystery. Indranee teased, “More details in due course. So do keep a look out!”
Reflecting on Shared Values
While SG60 will be a time of celebration, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong highlighted that it should also be an opportunity for reflection. Speaking at an event to celebrate the 60th birthday of Community Club Management Committees (CCMCs), Wong stressed the importance of renewing Singaporeans’ commitment to their shared future.
“SG60 should be a time for Singaporeans to reflect on our shared values, who we are, and what we stand for. It is an opportunity for us to renew our commitment to Singapore and build our future together,” Wong said.
SG60 Activities and Events
The Ministry of Culture, Community, and Youth (MCCY) has outlined the theme for SG60 as “Building Our Singapore Together.” To mark this significant year, a variety of events and activities will take place throughout 2025. The celebrations will kick off on December 31, 2024, with a nationwide countdown. Other major events include:
