During a Halloween event at the White House on Wednesday, President Joe Biden was seen playfully nibbling on the leg of a baby dressed as a chicken. The child was being held by its mother, who brought the little one to meet the President. In addition to this playful moment, Biden was also spotted kissing another child’s forehead and pretending to bite the knee of yet another toddler.
The mother appeared unfazed by the antics and enjoyed her conversation with Biden. Reports indicate that the baby giggled during the encounter, but social media reacted strongly to the unusual scene.
One Twitter user commented, “While President Trump mingles with garbage men at his rally in Wisconsin, Joe Biden is literally BITING BABIES at the White House Halloween Party. WTF IS THIS TIMELINE?” Another user added humorously, “I can’t stop laughing at this clip of Biden greeting a baby dressed as a chicken while ominous music plays in the background.” A third user exclaimed, “Someone call 911! JOE BIDEN JUST BIT A SECOND BABY AT THE WHITE HOUSE!”
As Biden interacted with other children showcasing their Halloween costumes, this lighthearted moment comes amidst a more serious situation. Following a speech on Tuesday, Biden faced backlash after he reportedly referred to Donald Trump’s supporters as “garbage.” The comment was made during an address to a Latino advocacy group and referenced a joke made by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe at a Trump rally.
Biden stated, “Just the other day, a speaker at [Trump’s] rally called Puerto Rico a ‘floating island of garbage.’ The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters. His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable and un-American.”
In the aftermath of the remarks, White House officials have been working to clarify Biden’s comments, suggesting that an apostrophe at the end of “supporter’s” indicated he was targeting Hinchcliffe specifically, not all Trump supporters. Despite these efforts, the remarks stirred significant controversy among Trump’s supporters.
Former President Trump condemned Biden’s comments as “worse” than Hillary Clinton’s infamous “deplorables” label. In response, Biden issued a revised statement, explaining, “I referred to the hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico as garbage, which is the only word I can think of to describe it. His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable. That’s all I meant to say. The comments at that rally don’t reflect who we are as a nation.”
Biden’s clarification left many, both critics and supporters, confused or frustrated. Meanwhile, Trump took the opportunity to launch another attack on Biden during a rally in Pennsylvania.
