KUALA LUMPUR: Social media is buzzing about a dedicated fan of Jay Chou, known as the “King of Mandopop,” who gave birth during his recent concert in Malaysia.
On October 26, several witnesses reported online that a fan gave birth to a baby girl while waiting to enter Bukit Jalil Stadium in Kuala Lumpur. A Malaysian fan, who goes by @Angel_1125 on Douyin, shared a video from the scene. Initially, she thought the woman had fainted, only to learn later that she was actually in labor.
In another video, other concertgoers were seen cheering around the new mother, shouting, “It’s born!” One user humorously noted, “The baby was eager to hear Jay Chou’s music with her own ears.” Another joked, “The first song the baby heard was ‘Listen to Mother,’” referencing Chou’s tribute to his mom, Yeh Hui-mei.
Commenters acknowledged the mother’s devotion, with one saying it was risky for her to attend the concert so close to her due date. A colleague of the father, a Chinese cook at a Sichuan restaurant in Malaysia, confirmed that both the mother and her newborn daughter are doing well.
The father, Peng Jian, told the Malaysian newspaper China Press that they have chosen a name for their daughter but did not reveal it. He added that they ignored online suggestions to name her after Chou. Peng expressed their desire to attend another Chou concert if he performs in Malaysia again.
Jay Chou, 45, has been hugely popular in the Mandarin-speaking world since his debut in 2000. His latest album, Greatest Works of Art, released in 2022, was a major hit, garnering over 150 million streams in just eight hours. It became the world’s bestselling album that year, outperforming releases by Blackpink, BTS, and Taylor Swift. Chou was also named Spotify’s top Mandopop artist in 2022 and 2023.
His ongoing Carnival World Tour, which started in 2019, faced a pause due to the Covid-19 pandemic but resumed in December 2022. The tour has included stops in Asia, Australia, and Europe.
In a lighter moment, Chou’s fame has even aided law enforcement. In 2018, a man wanted for embezzlement traveled from Guangzhou to Fuzhou with his girlfriend to attend a Chou concert, only to be arrested in their hotel room before the show. The man, a long-time fan of Chou, pleaded with the police to let him go to the concert, but his request was denied.
