A 25-year-old Nepalese farm laborer has been arrested for allegedly murdering his pregnant wife in Kotkhai, Shimla district. Ramesh Roka is accused of bludgeoning his wife, Dhanmaya Roka, multiple times with an iron tool typically used for breaking stones.
Following the incident, Ramesh reportedly hid Dhanmaya’s body in a shed at an apple orchard. He fled the scene with their three-year-old child. The couple had been working as laborers in Kotkhai and had moved to the orchard just three months ago.
According to police, the body remained undiscovered for three days. The situation came to light when a fellow laborer noticed a foul smell, indicating the body had begun to decompose.
Police revealed that Ramesh struck his wife with an iron tool, known locally as a “jhabal.” He was apprehended within four hours of the case being reported. The couple worked on an apple orchard owned by Ramesh in Kotkhai Khaneti, where they lived with their child. Authorities noted that a heated argument had erupted between the couple three days prior, reportedly triggered by a phone call. Preliminary investigations suggest Ramesh suspected Dhanmaya of having an affair.
He was arrested while attempting to flee to Nepal from a restaurant in Narkanda. Ramesh is set to be presented in court on Wednesday.
