A 21-year-old woman has been charged for allegedly assaulting a toddler at a shopping centre in Perth.
The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon at the Park Centre in East Victoria Park. A mother was holding her child when a woman in a pink singlet approached them.
CCTV footage released by police shows the woman rushing towards the mother and then reaching out to assault the child while the mother tried to shield her toddler. The woman in the pink top then fled the scene. According to police, the toddler suffered facial injuries from the attack.
Later, officers confirmed they had arrested a woman from Ellenbrook after taking her into custody at Mirrabooka Shopping Centre around 11:10 AM. She has been charged with “aggravated assault occasioning bodily harm” and is scheduled to appear in court tomorrow.
Police identified the alleged attacker as Pamila-Raye Jetta. They noted that she was unknown to the mother. Authorities advised the public not to approach her if they see her. Fortunately, police reported that the toddler’s injuries were not serious, and both the mother and child are receiving support.
Premier Roger Cook expressed his shock at the incident after viewing the footage. “It must have been incredibly traumatic for the mother, and of course potentially very serious injuries for the baby involved,” he stated. “I just hope the mother and the baby are well and wish them all the very best.”
