Demi Moore spoke out about her controversial 1991 Vanity Fair cover, describing it as an empowering experience despite the mixed reactions it received at the time. The 61-year-old actress shared her thoughts during the 32nd annual Hamptons International Film Festival.
Her comments came in response to moderator Alina Cho’s questions about the photoshoot, which took place while she was pregnant with her second daughter, Scout.
Moore said, “The thing that really struck me when there was so much back and forth about it… was an honest expression of how I was feeling at that time.” She emphasized her sense of empowerment, stating, “I felt very empowered as a woman. I felt s***.”
She explained that the photoshoot was not originally meant for the cover. “That was actually done for me at the end of the shoot. We were doing it just so that we had a family photo,” Moore revealed.
At the time, the cover was criticized as being too provocative and was even packaged in a brown wrapper. “They had to put a brown wrapper,” Moore noted, highlighting the societal norms of the period.
She reflected on the culture surrounding pregnancy, saying, “You were celebrated when you found out you were pregnant and again when the baby was born. But in the in-between, you’re not supposed to remind anybody that you’ve ever had s** and that it’s a shameful thing.”
Moore pointed out a “silent agreement” regarding what is deemed acceptable, noting how women often face sidelining as they age. “Let’s just say up until now, we’ve kind of all agreed to this because that’s just the way it is. But that doesn’t make it the truth,” she concluded.
