Merseyside Baby Sets Record Weight, Leading Parents to Skip Newborn Clothes

by Jessica

A mother in Merseyside has left midwives stunned after her newborn son weighed an impressive 11 pounds and 11 ounces at birth. The baby, named Jonah, was described by his proud mother, Georgia Lamey, as the “biggest baby” the staff had ever seen during their careers at Liverpool Women’s Hospital.

Georgia and her partner Joe were initially told that their baby would likely weigh just under 10 pounds. Instead, Jonah’s weight matched that of a medium bowling ball, as reported by the Echo. Due to his size, the couple had to skip buying newborn clothes and instead dressed him in outfits meant for three-month-olds. This was not the first time Georgia and Joe had dealt with larger-than-average babies; their first two children also weighed around 10 pounds at birth, but Jonah’s weight was a surprise.

Georgia, who lives in Netherton, was informed during every scan that Jonah was growing at a “perfect weight”—not too large and not too small. However, during her 38-week check-up, a midwife reviewed her chart and asked if Georgia had previously delivered larger babies.

“I think she was expecting another big baby, but nothing close to how big Jonah was,” Georgia said, according to the Manchester Evening News.

The 25-year-old welcomed Jonah six days after her due date. Although she initially planned for a home birth, a visit from a midwife revealed that her amniotic fluid was murkier than expected, prompting a quick trip to the hospital.

Georgia experienced some challenges during labor, as Jonah’s size led to shoulder dystocia, making delivery difficult. “Childbirth wasn’t as great as I thought it would be because of how big he was. There was some intervention because he got a bit stuck,” she explained. When Jonah was finally born, the staff was astonished by his size. Georgia recalled, “When he was handed to me, he was so heavy that I had to give him to his dad. I couldn’t hold him any longer!”

During their hospital stay, several midwives came to meet the 5.3-kilogram baby. Georgia reported, “I had lots of midwives telling me it was the biggest baby they’d seen in their careers.” The couple had packed clothes for a newborn, but they were too small for Jonah. They had to put him in clothes meant for babies aged zero to three months, which he wore for only two weeks. Now at 12 weeks old, Jonah is already wearing outfits designed for six to nine months.

Georgia described the physical sensations she experienced toward the end of her pregnancy, saying, “I felt like my belly was bulging, like he was just going to escape out of my belly button. It was so weird; it felt like he was pushing out of me.”

“It’s amazing what your body is capable of,” she added. Jonah has been mistaken for an eight-month-old due to his size. Since returning home, Georgia has noticed that he has become quite popular in their community. “When I first got home from the hospital, people were knocking on the door wanting to see the baby,” she said.

Georgia and Joe are now waiting to find out if Jonah has claimed the title of the biggest baby born at the hospital this year.
