Glasgow Family with Newborn ‘Left with Nothing’ After Home Fire

by Jessica

A family in Glasgow is heartbroken after a fire left them “with nothing.” Deborah Ameh, a mother of two, was woken by her smoke alarm early Wednesday, October 2, around 6:30 AM. The fire broke out in their rented house on Forge Street in the Germiston area.

As Deborah rushed downstairs to ensure her children—a five-month-old baby and a five-year-old—were safe, she was met with a horrifying scene: her living room was engulfed in flames.

“We have lost everything,” the 34-year-old mother said. “All our belongings, including furniture, clothes, books, shoes, and even cherished photos, are gone. Everything is either burned or covered in smoke. There is nothing left.

“Except for my passport, everything else has been destroyed. It has been devastating, but I am grateful that my children and my grandmother are safe. It could have been a very different story. I thank God that we are all okay and that no one died.”

Deborah described the terrifying moment she discovered the blaze. “I woke up to the fire alarm going off. I quickly checked the upstairs rooms before heading downstairs. When I got to the living room, it was fully on fire. The flames had already spread, and most of the furniture was burning. It was frightening because my grandmother and my young children were in the house. I got them together and we managed to escape.”

Once outside, Deborah and her family watched helplessly as the fire engulfed their home. She was later taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary for treatment for smoke inhalation.

“The fire spread so quickly,” Deborah recalled. “The windows blew out, and doors fell. We could see flames consuming the entire house in just minutes. I was treated for smoke inhalation and had some blood tests before being released. It was scary, and I was shaken, but I am okay now.”

Footage from the scene shows the devastating aftermath, with the property completely destroyed. The living room has been gutted, with walls and ceilings collapsed during the fire. Wallpaper hangs in tatters, and the upstairs bedrooms are charred and covered in thick black smoke.

Currently, Deborah and her family are staying in an Airbnb until they can find a new place to live. In the meantime, neighbors have set up a GoFundMe to help the family get back on their feet.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Ambulance Service confirmed the response to the incident, stating, “We received a call to attend an incident on Forge Street, Glasgow. Two ambulances were dispatched, and one patient was transported to Glasgow Royal Infirmary.”
