Cyprus’ Cabinet has approved a new three-year plan aimed at protecting, promoting, and supporting breastfeeding. The goal is to foster a society that is more welcoming to mothers and infants in public spaces when it comes to feeding.
The health ministry introduced the proposal with the aim of empowering mothers to provide nourishment, affection, and health to their children. Health Minister Michalis Damianos emphasized that when breastfeeding is encouraged and safeguarded, it leads to improvements in societal well-being, economic outcomes, and public health.
In collaboration with the national committee for breastfeeding, the health ministry has developed a comprehensive strategy. This strategy includes initiatives to promote training programs and raise awareness about the significance of breastfeeding.
The plan outlines 25 actions across three main areas: policies to encourage breastfeeding, educational and training efforts, and research. It also includes legislative and other measures designed to create a supportive environment in healthcare settings, workplaces, and public spaces.
