DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG/Gray News) — A baby girl has recently been surrendered to the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) under the state’s Safe Haven Law.
The department reported on Friday that the baby, born on July 30, is now in its care. The Safe Haven Act allows parents in crisis to leave an infant up to 90 days old at designated locations, such as hospitals, police stations, and fire stations.
After an infant is surrendered, Iowa HHS places the child in approved foster homes while waiting for permanent adoption. Since the Safe Haven Law was enacted in 2002, 71 infants have been surrendered in Iowa.
The baby surrendered on Friday is the fifth this year. Last year, the department received 10 infants under the Safe Haven Law.
