Woman Criticized for Naming Baby After Popular Gen Z Trend

by Jessica

A woman has faced backlash after changing her baby’s name at the last minute to align with a popular TikTok trend. The mother revealed on TikTok that she decided to name her daughter “Demure Reign” after a phrase trending on the platform, “very demure, very mindful.” She shared that the name was a spontaneous switch from what she had originally planned.

The trend, which has gained significant attention on TikTok, involves the word “demure,” meaning reserved, modest, and shy, typically used to describe a woman. The mother proudly posted a video of her baby girl, captioning it, “See how she’s not crying! Very sweet, very cutesy, very demure.”

However, the choice of name has sparked mixed reactions online. On Reddit, many users criticized the name, arguing that it doesn’t align with the meaning of the word “demure.” One user commented, “Naming your kid Demure is not very demure, not very mindful, not very considerate.” Another expressed frustration with the trend, saying, “This demure thing is infuriating to me and I can’t figure out why. It just sounds so condescending.”

Some users were more concerned about the baby being named after a fleeting trend. One remarked, “Trends don’t last forever, as unfortunate as it is for this kid.” Another agreed, saying, “It’s not a great name, and this kid is stuck with it now. But it’s not as bad as some of the other atrocities on here.”

Despite the criticism, a few commenters were less harsh, with one noting, “At least demure is a real word.”

The trend originated from TikToker Jools Lebron, known online as @joolieannie, who posted a video titled “how to be demure at work.” The video quickly gained popularity, amassing 3.8 million views.
