New Breastfeeding Support Group to Assist Mothers Throughout East Texas

by Jessica

TYLER, Texas — Breastfeeding rates are dropping, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reporting that 60 percent of mothers do not breastfeed as long as they would like. To address this issue, Caroline Pillsbury, a lactation consultant at Christian Mother Frances, has established a new breastfeeding support group.

Pillsbury, who has witnessed many mothers discontinue breastfeeding due to lack of support, aims to offer both mentorship and companionship to new moms. “Many moms feel isolated and overwhelmed. Without support, it’s easy for them to give up,” Pillsbury said. “Later, they often regret not having more help.”

The new group provides a space for mothers to connect and share their experiences. It offers assistance with lactation and latching problems. “We help identify why a baby may not be getting enough milk or why a mother’s milk supply might be insufficient,” Pillsbury explained. “Our goal is to help moms feel more connected to their babies and improve their breastfeeding experience.”

The group welcomes all mothers, whether they are experienced or new to breastfeeding. Charlotte Hagy, a new mother and group member, shared her experience: “I thought breastfeeding would be straightforward, but it’s been challenging. My son is just a few weeks old, and I want to ensure he’s getting enough milk.”

Hagy appreciates the real-time feedback and support provided by lactation consultants, which helps her address any concerns and questions she has. “Having a lactation specialist available gives me peace of mind,” she said.

Pillsbury hopes the group will not only support mothers in their breastfeeding journey but also highlight the health benefits of breastfeeding. “Breastfeeding supports babies’ developing immune systems and offers significant health benefits for mothers, including reduced risks of ovarian cancer, high blood pressure, and arthritis,” Pillsbury noted. “Many health issues faced by mothers in East Texas can be prevented or alleviated through breastfeeding.”

The support group also offers Spanish translation services for non-English-speaking participants. Meetings are held every Monday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Catholic Charities, located at 305 W. Rusk St. in Tyler. Attendance is free, and no registration is required. Mothers are encouraged to bring their own pumps, bottles, or any other supplies they need.
