by Jessica

Cyprus police have arrested a 23-year-old man and his 21-year-old partner in connection with the death of their 3.5-month-old baby in Lakatamia last Sunday. The couple is suspected of manslaughter.

The infant was discovered under shocking conditions, showing signs of severe neglect and malnutrition. Medical examinations indicated that the baby had been unwell for at least 24 hours before dying, with no medical care provided by the parents.

The mother, originally from Thessaloniki, Greece, had traveled back to her home country just hours before the infant’s death, leaving the baby solely in the father’s care. While she stated that she intended to find work to support her family, the police are investigating her actions.

A post-mortem examination by state pathologists revealed significant neglect, including physical injuries that matched insect bites and evidence of inadequate care.

The living conditions in the couple’s apartment were found to be unsuitable for a baby, lacking essential items and showing a clear neglect of basic hygiene.

Both parents are currently in custody as the police investigation continues. Manslaughter charges are anticipated.
