A Guernsey-based charity has surpassed 40,000 donations of knitted baby items for Ukraine, marking a significant milestone in its ongoing appeal.
The initiative, which started shortly after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, focuses on providing essential items for newborns, including hats, blankets, vests, and comforters. These items are sent to families and pregnant women fleeing the war. Donations have come from local knitters as well as from as far away as Scotland.
Kay Rawlins, who leads the appeal for the group Stand with Ukraine, expressed her pride in the community’s support. “I think we are all terribly proud of what we are doing,” said Rawlins. “We don’t actively seek donations; they just keep coming in.”
The charity collects the items in Guernsey before packing them for delivery. A postal company sends the goods to Ukraine at no cost to the charity.
Rawlins believes the appeal has resonated so strongly due to people’s deep empathy for the war’s youngest victims. “The fact that it’s babies, who have no involvement in the conflict, makes people even more generous in their contributions,” she said. “We feel tremendous satisfaction knowing we’re helping those who are truly in need.”
