Westport’s Breastfeeding Support Group marked its first anniversary with a celebratory party for mothers and babies. The event took place ahead of World Breastfeeding Week, which runs from August 1 to 7.
The group was founded a year ago by Claire Larkin, an HSE lactation consultant, and Geraldine Barrett, a public health nurse and lactation consultant. They hold weekly meetings at the HSE Westport Primary Care Centre every Monday from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
At the celebration, Claire Larkin shared the group’s mission: “Our breastfeeding group supports mums in the community. Geraldine and I offer advice when needed. The group provides a safe, informal space for mothers and babies, especially during maternity leave, which can feel isolating.”
She emphasized the benefits: “These meetings allow mums-to-be, new mums, and experienced mums to share advice, experiences, and socialise. It’s a chance to build new friendships and speak with a breastfeeding expert.”
One new mother attending the group praised the support: “It’s amazing and brilliant! I’ve been coming for months. The support is invaluable—tea, chats, and practical advice. It’s lovely to watch the babies grow together. The reassurance you get is great.”
Geraldine Barrett highlighted the additional resources: “We host monthly speakers, including dieticians, physios, health promotion officers, dental nurses, first aid experts, psychologists, reflexologists, and birth trauma specialists.”
She added: “Our group is a drop-in every Monday from 11 to 12:30, attracting mums and babies from Westport, Murrisk, Mulranny, Aughagower, Islandeady, Louisburgh, Newport, and Achill. Thanks to all who have attended and helped us celebrate this milestone. Every breastfeed makes a difference.”
