An 18-year-old American tourist is under suspicion by police for allegedly throwing her newborn baby from a hotel window in Paris, according to local media reports.
French prosecutors confirmed on Monday that the infant, found outside a hotel in the city’s 20th arrondissement, was rushed to the hospital but died shortly after arriving.
Investigators believe the baby was thrown from a second-floor hotel room, as reported by police sources to French news outlet Paris Match.
The baby was found with its umbilical cord still attached and wrapped in cloth. The young woman was taken to the hospital and immediately placed in police custody, according to the Paris public prosecutor’s office. She had been traveling with a group of young adults through Europe, as stated by French news agency AFP.
The hotel where the incident occurred is identified as an Ibis Styles on Rue des Réglises, according to Le Parisien.
Authorities have launched a homicide investigation into the matter.
