Pram Appeal Sees Rising Demand as Charity Responds

by Jessica

A city-based baby bank has issued an urgent appeal for prams and baby travel systems due to a surge in demand from families in need.

Baby Godiva, established to support families struggling to afford essentials for young children, collects and sorts donations from the community before distributing them.

However, Chief Executive Kate Wilson revealed that the organization is running low on pushchairs and urgently requires more support.

“We’ve already given away 32 pushchairs this year, which averages about ten a month to families who need them,” she told BBC CWR. “We’re working with many teenage mothers, care leavers, and victims of domestic abuse, all of whom are in desperate need of help.”

Founded in 2019, Baby Godiva has been recognized by the BBC Make a Difference Awards. The charity was set up by Belle Edgar-McCabe, who was inspired by a young mother she met at a family hub, who couldn’t afford nappies.

Since then, Baby Godiva has helped hundreds of families and collaborated with midwives, health visitors, and social workers to expand its reach.

Wilson attributed the rise in demand to several factors, including the ongoing cost of living crisis. “Babies are very expensive, and many families are struggling right now,” she said. “Also, we’re currently working to raise awareness of the charity, so more people know we can help. This has led to an increased need for donations.”
