A mother says she was forced to kick her sister-in-law out of her daughter’s baby shower after the woman made hurtful comments that brought the mom-to-be to tears. Fortunately, the family has largely sided with her.
In a post on Reddit’s “Am I The A——” forum, the 47-year-old woman shared the details of the confrontation that occurred during her 25-year-old daughter’s baby shower for her second child. Her daughter had previously suffered the loss of her first child, Phillip, who was stillborn two years ago at 38 weeks.
“When she lost him, she asked us to take apart the nursery before she got home and ‘get rid of’ the baby equipment because it was too painful to have around,” the mother explained. The family offered to return the baby shower gifts, but most of the gift-givers declined, instead requesting that the items be donated. However, her husband’s sister, Rachel, reacted differently.
“Rachel made a huge deal about my daughter being ‘hysterical’ and loudly criticized us for dismantling the nursery,” the mother continued. Since then, she limited Rachel’s interaction with her daughter, allowing her to attend family events only after promising to stop bringing up the painful topic.
However, tensions flared again during the baby shower when Rachel made a cruel remark. As the family began opening gifts, Rachel said, “If you hadn’t torn Phillip’s nursery apart and gotten rid of everything, you wouldn’t be here begging for presents for this baby.”
The comment left the daughter frozen with tears streaming down her face. Seeing her daughter’s distress, the mother demanded that Rachel leave, but she refused. In a moment of frustration, the mother grabbed Rachel’s gift, walked to the door, and threw it outside, shouting, “Get out, NOW!”
Her husband, who had heard the commotion, entered the room, and after being informed of the situation, physically escorted Rachel outside.
Although the family was initially divided over the incident, the mother later shared that after a family meeting, they all agreed that Rachel was to blame. She would no longer be allowed around her daughters or their children, or at any large family gatherings.
Most Reddit users supported the mother’s decision, with one commenter advising that any family members who didn’t fully support her daughter should be cut off. Another praised her for showing restraint in the face of Rachel’s cruel behavior, saying, “Your SIL took a joyous occasion and poured acid all over it.”
The community also wished the mother and her daughter well, with one person expressing hope that the pregnancy would be smooth and that the new baby would bring the family joy.
