16-Week Pregnant Johanne Defay Reaches Quarterfinals in Portugal

by Jessica

In 2024, France’s Johanne Defay made a strong comeback at the MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal in Peniche, winning the event while four months pregnant. Although it was understandable if the Olympic bronze medalist had decided not to defend her title, Defay’s performance at Supertubos has been impressive. She surged into the quarterfinals after a dominant showing.

In the Round of 16, Defay made quick work of Tahitian rookie Vahine Fiero, with her pregnancy barely noticeable as she powered through to the next stage.

“I’m super happy to get that win, and I feel so supported here. It’s really nice to have my last event in Europe,” Defay said after her victory.

Defay’s next challenge in the quarterfinals will be facing Olympic gold medalist Caroline Marks. Last year, Marks defeated Defay in the quarterfinals at Sunset Beach and El Salvador and also triumphed over her in the semifinals of the Olympics in Tahiti.

At 31 years old, Defay is the oldest surfer still in the competition, which is dominated by younger, up-and-coming talent. Defending world champion Caity Simmers, along with rising stars Erin Brooks and Bella Kenworthy, have all reached the quarterfinals, setting up a generational clash when the competition resumes.

Regardless of the outcome, this will be Defay’s final event before taking a break for maternity leave.
