A father from northern California has been arrested after authorities say he became intoxicated and accidentally fell asleep on his 5-month-old baby.
The incident occurred in Paradise, a town about 90 miles north of Sacramento. Police received a call around 11:50 p.m. on Sunday about a child who was not breathing. Officers and emergency responders rushed to the scene but were unable to revive the baby, who was pronounced dead at the location. The gender of the child has not been disclosed.
An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death, according to the police.
According to the police investigation, the father had been drinking and fell asleep on his baby, leading to the tragic incident. The father has been arrested and charged with manslaughter and child abuse resulting in death. He is currently held at Butte County Jail with a bail set at $80,000. It is unclear whether he has legal representation, as his case has not yet appeared in Butte County court records. Prosecutors will decide whether to file formal charges and, if so, what charges to bring.
The Butte County District Attorney’s Office has not yet responded to a request for comment from USA TODAY.
