While the event wasn’t a competition, hospital officials emphasized that the health of both newborns was the top priority. Nonetheless, delivering the first baby of the year brings a sense of pride to the hospital team.
At Central Maine Medical Center (CMMC), a celebratory chime is played whenever a baby is born, spreading the joyful news throughout the hospital. That chime rang bright and early on New Year’s Day with the birth of Baby Boy Kimbela.
Tasha Duval, the chief of obstetrics and gynecology at Central Maine Healthcare, said, “What a great way to start the new year, not only for the family of the newborn but for all of us here at CMMC. Our maternity team is dedicated to providing a safe and nurturing environment for birth, and we look forward to welcoming many more newborns in 2025.”
In 2024, approximately 750 babies were born at CMMC. The hospital has earned recognition for its maternity care, with U.S. News & World Report naming it “High Performing in Maternity Care” and Newsweek ranking it as one of the best maternity hospitals in the nation.
Meanwhile, in Portland, Kolton Robert was born at 7:27 a.m. to Mariah Rouille and Robert Desrosier of South Paris at Northern Light Mercy Hospital. He weighed 8 pounds, 4.9 ounces at birth.
Elsewhere in the state, additional babies were born in Augusta and Bangor, bringing the total number of New Year’s Day births in Maine to five.
