B.C.’s First Babies of 2025 Are Here

Several families across British Columbia welcomed the new year with the arrival of newborns, marking the first babies born in the province in 2025.

The first child born in B.C. this year arrived at 12:02 a.m. PT on Wednesday at Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops. Jordan and Elijah Hill proudly welcomed their son, Emerson, who weighed seven pounds 10 ounces. This is the couple’s first child. Jordan shared that Emerson was actually due on January 3 but arrived two days early.

“He’s very snuggly and loves to cuddle,” Jordan said from her hospital bed.

Elijah, wearing a Seattle Mariners cap, explained that their son was named after baseball pitcher Emerson Hancock. “I don’t know any boy Emersons except for that pitcher on the Mariners. So yeah, we kind of fell in love with it,” he said.

In the Fraser Health region, the first baby of the year arrived at 12:07 a.m. PT at Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster. Parents Jamie Carballo and Jeremy Borys celebrated the birth of their son, who weighed seven pounds one ounce. They have yet to choose a name.

Also at 12:07 a.m. PT, baby Zion Ebo Zormelo-Kika was born at Victoria General Hospital in Island Health. He weighed eight pounds three ounces.

At St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, Providence Health Care reported the birth of baby girl Deena Suna at 11:10 a.m. PT. Uma Suna and her partner welcomed their daughter, who weighed seven pounds one ounce.

CBC News is waiting for information from Vancouver Coastal Health and Northern Health about their first babies born in 2025.

In 2024, the first baby born in B.C. arrived exactly at midnight at Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster. Parents Julia Goryn and Travis Stutsky celebrated the birth of their first child, Taylor.
