A baby was tragically found dead in a snowy parking lot after a shop owner initially mistook the child for a doll.
Harjas Dhaliwal, the owner of Gz 2 Gentz Barbershop, arrived at his shop around 10 a.m. on Saturday and noticed a box in the snow. He thought nothing of it at the time. However, several hours later, as a client was leaving, Dhaliwal was shocked to see a baby lying next to the box by his parked car.
Dhaliwal and others immediately searched the area for any signs of the child’s parents but found no one nearby. “I thought maybe it was just a doll sitting there,” Dhaliwal said. When his client ran back to the shop to get help, Dhaliwal called 911 right away. Paramedics arrived within minutes.
Nearby businesses were temporarily closed as police cordoned off the scene. The Edmonton Police Service’s homicide unit is investigating the infant’s suspicious death. Authorities are asking anyone with information or dashcam footage from the area between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday to come forward.
Two Babies Found Abandoned in Freezing Conditions
In a separate incident, two babies were found abandoned in freezing temperatures in Indianapolis, prompting a police investigation.
Robert Deane was outside his home on the southeast side of the city when he noticed two car seats in a ditch. Upon closer inspection, he discovered two baby girls, aged 4 and 5 months, left in icy conditions.
Police later determined that the infants had been kidnapped earlier in the day in a stolen vehicle. It is unclear how long the babies had been exposed to the 27-degree weather. Indianapolis police spokesperson William Young expressed concern over the situation, saying, “It’s extremely cold out here. Who knows what could have happened if this person had not come outside?”
Deane was praised for his quick thinking in taking the babies to safety. “He did what any good person would do,” said Young. “He got those infants to shelter. This is an outcome we wanted.”
Authorities have not yet arrested a suspect but say finding the person responsible is their next priority.
