A nanny who recently moved to Utah has been charged with severely abusing a 6-week-old boy in her care.
Lindsay E. Johnson, 32, was charged on Monday in Utah’s 3rd District Court in Summit County with five counts of aggravated child abuse, a second-degree felony.
According to court documents, the infant was admitted to Primary Children’s Hospital on Friday with severe brain injuries, which doctors determined were caused by nonaccidental trauma. Just six days earlier, the child had received a routine checkup and was reported to be healthy.
In addition to the brain injuries, the baby also had two broken ribs and broken femurs, the charges stated.
The Summit County Sheriff’s Office investigation revealed that Johnson, who had been caring for the infant from Thursday night into Friday morning, was responsible for the injuries. On Friday morning, while the parents were with their son, the child began having a seizure, according to the documents.
Prosecutors have requested that Johnson be denied bail, citing concerns that she may flee to Vermont. They noted she has only been in Utah since early November.
