HCA Florida Hosts Baby Shower for Mom After 10 Weeks of Care

by Jessica

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL — Kelly Herrera, an expectant mother, has been under the care of HCA Florida University Hospital in Davie since she faced the threat of a premature delivery at just over 21 weeks of pregnancy.

“It started when I was 21 weeks and 3 days,” Herrera recalled. “I woke up around 5:30-6 in the morning, felt wetness, went to the bathroom, and my water broke.”

For the next 10 weeks, Herrera remained in the hospital to prevent an early birth of her fourth daughter, Ryli. Now nearly 31 weeks into her pregnancy, she and her family celebrated this milestone with a special event honoring Kelly’s strength and perseverance.

“It’s been a tough journey, and I wasn’t sure I’d make it this far,” Herrera said, reflecting on her pregnancy. “I’m just happy to have reached this point. Many people don’t have the same outcome.”

With the support of her doctors and the hospital staff, Herrera’s pregnancy has reached key stages, and doctors are optimistic about the baby’s health.

“Kelly has made significant progress, and we’re confident her baby will have a good prognosis at birth,” said Dr. Neil Salas, Herrera’s obstetrician and gynecologist.

The journey has been emotional for Herrera. Some days were filled with positivity, while others were overwhelming.

“There were days when I felt fine and positive, and others when I didn’t think I could continue,” she said. “But I held it together as best as I could.”

Once Ryli arrives, she will join three sisters at home. Herrera is excited for the day she gets to bring her baby girl home, hoping to spend Christmas with her family.

“I’ll be ecstatic to be home for Christmas — hopefully with the baby, too,” she said. “I’m looking forward to being with my other girls and my family.”

Premature Birth: Risks and Challenges

Babies born prematurely often face serious health issues due to the underdevelopment of key organs and body systems. According to the Cleveland Clinic, premature birth can lead to complications such as underdeveloped lungs, intestinal inflammation, blood infections, and vision problems.

Premature infants are also at greater risk for developmental delays, including hearing and vision impairments, learning disabilities, and cerebral palsy.

However, thanks to the care provided by HCA Florida University Hospital, Herrera and Ryli have gained crucial time for the baby’s development, giving her the best chance for a healthy future.

Risk Factors for Premature Birth

The Cleveland Clinic lists several risk factors that may increase the likelihood of a premature birth, including:

Being Black r Hispanic

Carrying multiples (e.g., twins or triplets)

Being under 17 or over 35 years old

A personal or family history of preterm births

Smoking, drinking alcohol, or using other substances during pregnancy

Being underweight before pregnancy or not gaining enough weight during pregnancy
