The remains of a baby discovered in a field by a dog walker have been identified as those of a newborn girl. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed that following a post-mortem examination, the infant has been named “Ava” — a name previously withheld as she was only identified as “Baby A.”
The baby’s remains were found by a woman walking her dog near Ashtons Field in Little Hulton, Salford, at around 12:30 GMT on November 20.
The cause of Ava’s death is still unknown. GMP said further forensic and pathological tests are necessary to determine the circumstances. In the meantime, flowers, teddy bears, and other tributes left at the scene in her memory will be collected and donated to children’s charities.
The police have been conducting extensive investigations, including house-to-house inquiries and reviewing CCTV footage, as part of their efforts to uncover what happened to Ava.
The baby’s body was found in a field near a road layby, close to warehouses and not far from two junctions of the M61 motorway. Last week, police revealed that Ava had been wrapped in pink fabric. Detectives are working with soil experts, archaeologists, and anthropologists to determine how long her body had been in the field before it was discovered.
Search for Ava’s Mother Continues
Detective Chief Inspector Charlotte Whalley from GMP emphasized the importance of finding Ava’s mother. “We are doing everything we can to identify Ava’s mother,” she said. “We urge her to come forward, especially if she needs medical help. We are also appealing to her family to contact us.”
“We believe someone knows what happened to Ava. Please know that trained officers are here to support you.”
Police have renewed their appeal for information, asking people to think back to the past few months. “Maybe you heard or saw something that didn’t seem right at the time. It could seem insignificant, but now, it could be crucial to finding the truth for Ava.”
