Missouri Mom and Baby Killed by Police After Knife Lunge

by Jessica

Shocking body camera footage has emerged showing a Missouri mother holding her baby as she lunges at police officers with a large kitchen knife. Both the mother and her two-month-old baby were fatally shot in the incident. Officers had responded to a reported family assault in Independence, Missouri.

What the Footage Shows

The video, released by the Independence Police Department (IPD), captures a tense encounter between the officers and the mother, 34-year-old Maria Pike. Pike was visibly upset and holding her infant daughter, Destinii Hope, as she stood inside a closet in her home. The officers are seen speaking to Pike in a calm manner, urging her to hand over the baby.

According to the IPD, the officers made repeated requests for Pike to release the child. However, these attempts were unsuccessful. Pike then left the closet, walked past the officers, and sat on a bed beside a nightstand. Her husband, who is the father of the child, sat shirtless on the bed nearby.

The Moment of Violence

Eleven minutes into the footage, Pike suddenly grabbed a large knife from the bedside table and lunged at one of the officers. “Woah!” a male officer is heard exclaiming as Pike advanced with the weapon. Pike then turned toward another officer, holding the knife above her head, with her baby still in her arms.

The Independence Police Department described the events: “She retrieved a large kitchen-style knife and charged at officers, while still holding the child.” In response, one of the officers fired at Pike. Both she and her baby were struck and sustained fatal injuries.

Aftermath and Investigation

The officer who fired the shots has not been publicly named, and the incident remains under investigation. The three officers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending further inquiry.

“The Independence Police Department has been and will continue to be as transparent as legally permitted,” the department said in a statement. “IPD fully understands the public interest in this case and will cooperate fully with the external investigation being led by the Police Involved Investigation Team.”

No additional details have been released about what transpired after the video footage ended.
