A 30-year-old pregnant woman from Doddabelavangala, near Doddaballapur, reportedly took her own life on November 20, leaving behind a death note accusing her husband and in-laws of harassment. Police have arrested her husband, Suresh Kumar, on charges including dowry death.
The woman, identified as Roopa, also known as Rathnamma GR, was a BEd graduate. She married Kumar in December 2022 after a workplace romance, despite initial opposition from her family. Roopa’s family gave 100 grams of gold as a wedding gift, while Kumar’s relatives covered the wedding expenses.
According to a complaint filed by Roopa’s elder brother, Rohit, the harassment began just three months after the marriage, with repeated demands for dowry. On the morning of November 20, Roopa, who was five months pregnant, sent a distressing message to her brother saying, “I am sorry brother, please forgive me,” followed by a handwritten death note.
Despite Rohit’s efforts to counsel her and contact Kumar, Roopa was found dead in her bedroom. She was rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
In her final note, Roopa apologized to her brother for not listening to his advice about the marriage. She described the emotional pain she had endured, blaming her in-laws and husband for her situation, and pleaded for justice. The note also included emotional farewells to her parents and grandfather.
A senior police officer confirmed that Kumar had been arrested and charged under the Dowry Prohibition Act, as well as Sections 85 (subjecting a woman to cruelty) and 80 (dowry death) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS). The investigation is ongoing.
