Chennai Couple Gives Birth at Home with Advice from WhatsApp Group

by Jessica

A couple in Chennai is under investigation after they chose to deliver their baby at home with guidance from a WhatsApp group, instead of consulting medical professionals. The incident has sparked widespread attention, including social media discussions.

Manoharan, a 36-year-old earthmover, and his 32-year-old wife, Sukanya, are members of a WhatsApp group called “Home Birth Experiences.” The group, which reportedly has over 1,000 members, shares advice on how to safely deliver babies at home, complete with illustrations.

The couple decided to rely on this online community for the birth of their third child. They already have two daughters, aged eight and four. Despite Sukanya’s pregnancy, the couple chose not to seek medical check-ups or professional care during the pregnancy. When Sukanya went into labor on November 17, the couple opted to follow the instructions from the WhatsApp group, and Manoharan assisted with the delivery at home.

After the birth, the local Public Health Officer filed a complaint with the Kundrathur police, accusing Manoharan of violating medical safety regulations. The police investigation revealed the couple’s connection to the WhatsApp group, which played a significant role in their decision to avoid professional medical help.

Local health officials have since met with Manoharan, explaining the dangers of relying on unverified online information. They emphasized the need for proper medical guidance for both the mother and the newborn. Health authorities confirmed that Sukanya and her baby would receive the necessary medical care.
