Police have confirmed the discovery of an infant’s body in a field in Salford.
The remains were found around 12:30 GMT by a woman walking her dog near Ashtons Field in the Little Hulton area.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) reported that detectives are working with partner agencies to identify the baby, referred to as “Baby A,” and to determine how and when the child died.
A post-mortem examination is scheduled within the next two days. Police stated that it is too early to establish Baby A’s gender, ethnicity, age, or how long the body had been in the field. The site is near a bridge over the M61 motorway.
Police Seek Answers
Ch Supt Neil Blackwood, GMP’s district commander for Salford, said, “We are pursuing several lines of inquiry and working closely with local agencies.”
He acknowledged the distressing nature of the discovery, saying, “We understand this news will deeply affect our communities. While we do not yet have all the answers, I want to assure residents that we are doing everything we can to find out what has happened.”
Appeal for Information
Chief Superintendent Blackwood urged anyone with information to come forward.
“Our priority is to find answers for this baby,” he said. “Even the smallest detail could be vital to our investigation. If you have seen anyone in the area recently or have information about the parents, please contact us immediately.”
He added, “We will share further details as soon as we can confirm them.”
Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the discovery.
