NASHIK: A pregnant woman, along with two relatives and a doctor, narrowly escaped injury on Wednesday night when the ambulance transporting her exploded just minutes after they had exited the vehicle. The incident took place around 9:30 p.m., as the ambulance was en route to a district hospital.
Jalgaon District Collector Ayush Prasad has ordered an investigation into the explosion. He confirmed, “A pregnant woman was being transported to the Jalgaon District Hospital at the time of the incident. Fortunately, the driver acted swiftly, evacuating everyone from the vehicle before it caught fire. Police and transport department officials have been instructed to investigate the cause of the explosion and submit a detailed report.”
According to Inspector Mahesh Sharma from the Jalgaon Taluka Police Station, the explosion occurred on a flyover in Jalgaon city. “The pregnant woman was being transferred from Dharangaon to Jalgaon District Hospital in a 108 emergency response ambulance. As the vehicle approached the Dadawadi area along the Surat-Kolkata National Highway, the driver noticed smoke emanating from the ambulance. He immediately stopped and evacuated the occupants. Firefighters were called to the scene, but the vehicle quickly engulfed in flames. The explosion shattered windows of nearby houses and commercial buildings,” said Sharma.
The explosion caused traffic on the highway to be halted for approximately 90 minutes while emergency crews removed the ambulance and cleared the road.
In response to the incident, Collector Prasad has directed health officials to ensure that there are enough ambulances available to meet the healthcare needs of the public.
