TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — Police are investigating the death of an infant discovered in Idaho’s only baby box, located in Blackfoot.
A baby box is designed to safely protect newborns left by their parents, allowing quick access for medical personnel. It provides a secure environment for vulnerable infants.
Earlier this month, a newborn girl was found dead in this baby box, drawing concern from Rock Creek Fire Chief Aaron Zent. “This incident has brought the issue to our attention,” Zent said. “While we haven’t addressed it yet, we will discuss it in upcoming meetings.”
Idaho only legalized the use of baby boxes in March of this year. These boxes can be installed in hospitals and fire stations, where trained EMTs can provide emergency care. Zent noted that fire stations offer a non-judgmental environment for parents in distress.
Monica Kelsey, founder of Safe Haven, emphasized the need for medical staff to be available, as many infants are born outside hospitals. Installing baby boxes takes time, not only for setup but also for training first responders, which can take nearly four months on average.
The boxes are provided at no cost to hospitals and fire stations, funded by donations. Kelsey also announced plans to install another baby box in Idaho next year.
