Grimes, the ex-partner of Elon Musk, has ignited controversy by claiming her sexuality shifted after becoming pregnant. The 36-year-old artist, who shares three children with the Tesla CEO, voiced her thoughts on social media platform X, pondering whether hormonal changes were responsible for her feelings.
In her post on October 22, Grimes stated, “I became way less gay after I was pregnant.” She explained that while her focus on reading and writing improved, her ability to concentrate on technical matters declined significantly. “Is this all explained by hormones?” she asked.
Although Grimes has not publicly defined her sexuality, she has previously joked about establishing a “lesbian space commune” on Europa, one of Jupiter’s moons. Her comments sparked a lively discussion among her 1.3 million followers, who shared their thoughts on how maternal hormones might have impacted her decreased interest in dating women.
The musician, whose real name is Claire Elise Boucher, noted that her testosterone levels had also dropped. One user commented, “Yeah, it’s the progesterone sister,” referring to the hormone linked to menstruation and pregnancy, known to influence libido but not sexual orientation.
Another follower suggested that her feelings of being “less gay” might stem from her heterosexual relationship with Musk at the time. Grimes countered this by arguing that her past intimacy with Musk should have made her feel “more gay.” One user shared her own experience, stating, “I’m bisexual, which I thought went away over time because my focus was on men. After more digging, I realized I never was heterosexual. Pregnancy can create same-sex dreams, but I don’t think it can change your sexual orientation.”
A fourth user reacted, “Did Grimes really say she became ‘way less gay’ after pregnancy? I’m crying!” Meanwhile, a skeptical follower advised Grimes to consult a doctor, stating, “X is not the best place, because you’ll get 100 different theories.” In response, Grimes expressed her curiosity about the theories, mentioning her reading on the effects of pregnancy on brain function.
Elon Musk has 11 children with three different women. Last September, Grimes filed a lawsuit against Musk for primary physical custody and joint legal custody of their three children. Following negotiations between their legal teams, the Texas court sealed the case records in December, leaving the current status of the case unclear.
