Justine Lupe has addressed her earlier comments regarding her pregnancy while filming Nobody Wants This. The actress clarified who among the cast and crew was aware of her condition during production.
In a September 26 Instagram post, Lupe, 35, shared a humorous moment when her Gucci skirt ripped open at 2 a.m. on set. She noted that her colleagues supported her without knowing she was pregnant, thinking she was just having a wardrobe malfunction. However, in a follow-up post on October 13, she explained that her castmates did know about her pregnancy once it was safe to share the news. “Women who have been pregnant understand that the first few months carry a higher risk of miscarriage. It’s emotionally challenging to announce it too early,” she wrote. Lupe emphasized her appreciation for her supportive coworkers, stating, “Every single person on this set made sure I was cozy and taken care of.”
Lupe praised her onscreen sister, Kristen Bell, for her enthusiastic reaction when she learned the news. She described Bell running around her living room in a sheet mask, celebrating and promising to make the experience as comfortable as possible. Lupe also expressed gratitude to Nobody Wants This creator Erin Foster, who was pregnant during production. Foster offered Lupe a comforting hug and eased her concerns about working while pregnant. (Foster and her husband, Simon Tikhman, welcomed their first child, daughter Noa, on May 17.)
Lupe acknowledged the show’s costume team and cinematographers for their support during her pregnancy. She mentioned that every Netflix executive on set congratulated her, highlighting the unique situation of having four pregnant women on set.
The actress shared her story to combat the narrative that motherhood is detrimental to careers in the entertainment industry. “There is a perception that becoming a mother is a death sentence for your career,” she explained. “While this narrative has some historical basis, I believe things are changing.” Lupe has witnessed friends successfully balancing work and motherhood, which has inspired her. “This set made me feel safe creatively and interpersonally, and it’s important for women to hear this positive narrative.”
Lupe recently welcomed her baby but has kept details private. On October 10, she shared a lighthearted Instagram post about her new life as a mother, joking about using a device for infant gas relief.
In Nobody Wants This, Lupe plays Morgan, sister to Bell’s character, Joanne. The Netflix series, which premiered last month, explores the unconventional romance between Joanne, a sex podcaster, and Noah, played by Adam Brody, a newly single rabbi. The cast also includes Timothy Simons, Jackie Tohn, Sherry Cola, Tovah Feldshuh, Paul Ben-Victor, Stephanie Faracy, and Emily Arlook. The show was renewed for a second season just two weeks after its debut.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter on October 14, Foster revealed that she and the writers have been developing new storylines for about three weeks. She mentioned that both Bell and Lupe visited the writers’ room to discuss ideas, noting the positive reactions they received, which Foster described as unprecedented since Frozen.
