Mayo is set to host a variety of events in celebration of National Breastfeeding Week, which runs from October 1 to 7. This year’s theme is “Supporting You from Bump to Baby and Beyond.”
As part of the festivities, several branches of Mayo County Council’s libraries will read the children’s book Milky by Maria Betsworth. Additionally, Mayo Movie World in Castlebar will screen the film Joyride for breastfeeding mothers and their babies on Sunday, October 6.
Information stands will be available in the foyer of Mayo University Hospital, as well as outside Penney’s in Castlebar and Tesco in Swinford. These stands will provide resources for anyone interested in breastfeeding. Educational sessions will also take place at Mayo University Hospital, and in Westport and Swinford.
Six weekly breastfeeding support groups will continue to meet in Ballina, Claremorris, Castlebar, Charlestown, Turlough, and Westport.
The HSE, Healthy Ireland, Mayo CYPSC, Mayo Family Resource Centres, and Friends of Breastfeeding are supporting Breastfeeding Awareness Week in Mayo.
Claire Larkin, a Community Lactation Consultant in Mayo, encourages expectant mothers to join the support groups. “It’s a great opportunity to learn from other moms about what to expect in those early days,” she said. “Our members are always honest and generous in sharing their experiences. We look forward to seeing them return with their new babies!”
Larkin emphasized that the support groups serve as safe spaces for mothers at all stages. Whether someone is pregnant and considering breastfeeding, new to the experience, or facing challenges, these groups are open to all.
Maura Tilbury, a breastfeeding mother from Westport, shared her positive experience with the support group. “During the difficult initial weeks of establishing breastfeeding, Claire offered invaluable advice and reassurance. Thanks to this support, I have been able to continue breastfeeding for this long.”
