The family of a 10-month-old baby, who suffered severe burns when a stranger threw a thermos of hot coffee on him in a Brisbane park, is urging police to disclose more information about the suspect.
Queensland Police suspect that the attacker has fled the country. The baby’s parents are calling for details about the offender to be shared with the public.
On Thursday, the family, wishing to remain anonymous, returned to the park in Stones Corner for the first time since the incident. They noted that burns are still visible on their son’s body. “He’s really strong, resilient, and brave,” his mother told 7NEWS. “We can’t believe how well he’s doing. He’s so happy and hitting all his milestones,” added his father.
To celebrate their son’s 10-month milestone, just weeks after he was hospitalized with burns on his face and chest, the baby wore a miniature police uniform given to him by the investigating squad.
However, the family feels that too much information about the case has not been made public. “We would just like a bit of assurance that we are on the right track and that the offender is going to get caught,” the father said. He also questioned how the police plan to bring the suspect back and if the country where he is currently located is cooperating with the investigation.
While police have confirmed that international authorities are assisting with the case, Queensland Police Acting Commissioner Shane Chelepy explained to 7NEWS that the limited release of information is intentional. “We need to balance our investigative strategies with the need for the community to know what’s going on,” Chelepy said.
As police continue to search for the suspect, the family is settling into a new home, hoping for a renewed sense of safety. “I think it’ll just be a nice, new, fresh start after such a difficult month,” the mother expressed.
