On Saturday, the Black Maternal Health Expo (BMHE) made its return alongside the Babypalooza Baby Expo at the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex (BJCC) East Ballroom.
The event drew hundreds of visitors and featured numerous local and national exhibitors specializing in baby and maternity products and services. Attendees had the opportunity to start baby registries, explore preschools, set up college savings plans, and learn essential care tips for both expectant mothers and their babies.
In the U.S., Black women face a significantly higher maternal mortality rate—nearly three times that of white women—highlighting severe disparities in maternal health. The BMHE addresses these issues directly by offering a supportive environment for Black mothers to access resources tailored to their specific needs.
The expo provided critical support, including access to culturally competent OB-GYNs, midwives, and doulas, as well as support groups that foster community and solidarity. Black mothers, both expectant and new, could find information on prenatal and postpartum care, breastfeeding support, and mental health services.
This event serves as a crucial resource for Black mothers, equipping them with the necessary tools and support to confidently manage their pregnancy journey. By uniting healthcare professionals, community leaders, and support networks, the BMHE strives to uplift and empower Black mothers, ensuring they receive the care and respect they deserve.
