Kylie Jenner recently opened up about her experience with postpartum depression and how it affected her ability to name her son. In an interview with British Vogue, Jenner, the founder of Kylie Cosmetics, shared that she struggled with postpartum depression for about a year after each of her children was born.
Jenner, 27, has a 6-year-old daughter named Stormi and a 2-year-old son, Aire, with her ex-partner, Travis Scott. She explained that her emotional state was particularly intense after the birth of her son, describing how she experienced “major baby blues” and struggled with emotional reactions that were out of character for her.
“I was on the phone with my mom all day, hysterically crying, saying, ‘I can’t figure out his name,'” Jenner recounted. She described feeling overwhelmed and guilty, saying she felt like a failure for not being able to choose a name that matched the perfection she saw in her son. “It just really triggered me,” she said.
It took Jenner a full year to finally decide on the name Aire for her son. Reflecting on her experience, she advises expecting parents to choose a name before the baby arrives, noting that hormonal changes can make decision-making extremely difficult.
According to a survey by BabyCenter, which included 4,000 parents and parents-to-be, most people choose their baby’s name during the second trimester. However, 17% decide on a name on the day their baby is born, and 8% wait several days or even weeks before making a decision.
Naming trends are influenced by social media and celebrities, leading many parents to opt for unique names. In contrast, some countries, like Germany, have strict laws regulating baby names, prohibiting names based on places, titles, or brands.
For some parents, the process of naming their child is so significant that they hire baby-naming consultants, whose services can cost up to $10,000.
