SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) — Families gathered at Blunt Park in Springfield for the inaugural community breastfeeding awareness walk.
The event provided crucial support for mothers and aimed to connect them with local resources.
“You have the opportunity to learn and access resources in this community that are ready and willing to support you,” said Shenell Ford, the event’s organizer.
August, recognized as National Breastfeeding Awareness Month, provided a special backdrop for the walk, aligning with Ford’s efforts to highlight the importance of breastfeeding.
“Sometimes we operate in isolation, so it’s great to come together—birth workers, lactation consultants, and behavioral health professionals. We have a wealth of resources in our city, and this event shows that we support you and you can absolutely succeed,” Ford explained.
Ford’s advocacy was echoed by fellow lactation consultant Moryn Mendoza, who offered advice for new parents.
“I recommend starting in the prenatal period. Take a breastfeeding class, attend as many sessions as possible, and connect with other breastfeeding families,” Mendoza suggested.
Megan Diaz, a local mother, shared her experiences to encourage others.
“Any amount of breast milk benefits babies. Even breastfeeding for just a few days is a success,” Diaz said. “We had positive breastfeeding experiences, and I believe it’s important for others to have the same opportunity.”
