Liam and Olivia continue to be the most popular baby names in the United States, but recent data reveals some intriguing state-specific preferences.
While Liam holds the top spot for boys nationwide, in Mississippi, the name John emerged as the most popular choice for newborn boys last year. John, once a top-four name throughout the 20th century, fell to 26th place in 2023 and has not been in the top 10 since the 1970s.
Similarly, in Alabama, William was the leading name for boys, diverging from national trends. Wyoming saw Henry as the top name, while Elijah was the most popular in Hawaii. Notably, Hawaii also saw Isla as the top name for girls, a unique trend among the states.
Liam, an Irish name derived from Ulliam, has gained significant popularity recently, partly due to celebrities like actors Liam Hemsworth and Liam Neeson, and singer Liam Payne of One Direction. Olivia, the top name for girls, was popularized by 17th-century playwright William Shakespeare and continues to be favored by new parents.
