How Crucial is the Health of Mother and Baby During IVF Treatment?

by Jessica

Preconception health plays a crucial role in the success of IVF treatments. Issues like obesity and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can significantly impact fertility. For instance, many obese and diabetic men experience azoospermia, where sperm is absent from semen. Such conditions also affect semen quality in men and ovarian reserve in women.

Dr. Samhitha, a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Prashanth Hospitals in Chennai, emphasizes the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. “I advise my patients to engage in daily exercise for about 30 minutes and achieve an ideal BMI,” she says. She notes that while genetic screening is not routinely recommended for all IVF couples, it is suggested for those with a history of recurrent miscarriages or previous births with anomalies.

Emotional support is critical during IVF treatments, which are often lengthy and involve numerous appointments, scans, and procedures under anesthesia. The process can be particularly challenging when faced with unsuccessful embryo transfers and repeated negative results. “Support and motivation are essential, especially when dealing with repeated cycles,” Dr. Samhitha adds.

Prenatal care is vital for all pregnancies, but especially so for those achieved through IVF. “IVF pregnancies often require additional support in the form of progesterone and other hormones. A common misconception is that bed rest is necessary for all IVF pregnancies. Instead, I recommend antenatal yoga and physiotherapy. Mobility is crucial, as excessive bed rest can negatively impact both physical and mental health,” Dr. Samhitha advises.

Postpartum care is equally important. Older mothers, particularly those over 35, often face medical issues like diabetes, hypertension, thyroid problems, and cardiac conditions. Regular follow-ups and monitoring of vital parameters are essential to address these health concerns effectively.
