by Jessica

Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) plans to implement InterSystems’ HealthShare Health Connect as its interoperability platform when the new children’s hospital opens in Dublin next year.

The platform will serve as the integration engine for over 70 systems at the €2.2 billion hospital, encompassing clinical and non-clinical applications, devices, and technologies.

Under CHI’s Project Ogham, the hospital will adopt Epic’s electronic health record, making it Ireland’s first digital hospital. Adrian Rath, CHI’s chief technology officer, emphasized that HealthShare Health Connect, leveraging HL7 v2 and FHIR standards, aligns with their IT strategy to deliver timely and formatted information.

“We will deploy more than 70 advanced systems for clinical, operational, and administrative support at the new hospital, requiring seamless communication,” said Mr. Rath. “InterSystems HealthShare Health Connect ensures uninterrupted interactions among these systems, enhancing service delivery for patients and staff.”

Rath highlighted the platform’s reliability, scalability, and user-friendly interface that expedites interface creation without extensive coding.

Beyond integrating the EHR with clinical systems, HealthShare Health Connect will link building automation, pharmacy dispensing units, and robotic logistics within the hospital. Colin Henderson, InterSystems UK&I country manager, stressed the importance of data consistency and usability in enabling informed decision-making across healthcare settings.

“With HealthShare Health Connect, we enable a fully connected healthcare environment, enhancing communication among healthcare professionals and improving patient safety through real-time information,” said Mr. Henderson.

In addition to Epic’s EHR and HealthShare Health Connect, CHI will integrate Ascom’s alerts and notification management system (ANMS) with Epic’s Rover application. The hospital’s technological infrastructure and IT services are being developed by Telefónica Tech UK and Ireland under a five-year agreement.
