Mosman and North Sydney, NSW – The most popular baby names in Mosman and North Sydney Local Government Areas (LGAs) for 2023 have been unveiled.
In Mosman LGA, William claimed the top spot for boys’ names in 2023, followed by Jack at number two, and James at number three. For girls, Lily took the lead as the most favored name, with Isla following closely behind at second place.
In North Sydney LGA, Amelia emerged as the top choice for girls’ names last year, closely followed by Eleanor. Among boys’ names, Leo, Henry, and Oliver topped the list.
These local preferences do not necessarily mirror the most popular names across the entire state of NSW.
Isla secured the top position statewide for girls’ names in 2023, a rise from its third place in 2022. Oliver reclaimed the number one spot for boys’ names, following a brief stint by Noah in 2022.
In addition to Amelia and Isla, the top ten girls’ names in NSW included Olivia, Mia, Charlotte, Ava, Lily, Sophia, Evelyn, and Matilda. For boys, the top ten comprised Noah, Leo, Henry, Theodore, Luca, Hudson, William, Lucas, and Charlie.
Newcomers to the NSW top 100 list for girls’ names included Amara, Maisie, Margot, Lucia, Lottie, Cleo, Kaia, Callie, Kiara, and Zahra. Among boys, new entries included Miles, Isaiah, Darcy, Tommy, Spencer, Parker, Mateo, and Marcus.

The latest data from the NSW Registry of Births, Deaths, and Marriages indicates a preference among lower north shore parents for traditional names. Over the past two decades, names like Thomas, Charlotte, Matilda, Henry, Sophie, and Alexandra have consistently ranked among the top choices in both Mosman and North Sydney LGAs.
In 2003, the top names in Mosman were William for boys and Charlotte for girls, while North Sydney favored William and Charlotte. By 2020, popular choices included Grace, Sienna, Olivia, Leo, Henry, and Jack.
The enduring popularity of these classic names reflects a longstanding tradition among local families when naming their children.
