Target has recalled a batch of its Good & Gather baby food after discovering elevated lead levels. The voluntary recall, issued on March 12, affects 26,500 units of the Good & Gather Baby Pea, Zucchini, Kale & Thyme Vegetable Purée, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported.
In a statement to USA TODAY, Target assured customers that safety is a top priority. “We’re committed to providing safe, high-quality products for our guests. We require our suppliers to meet all food safety standards and comply with federal, state, and local regulations,” the company said. “This recall involves a limited amount of product, and we took immediate action to remove it from our shelves.”
The FDA classified the recall as a Class II, which means that while the product may cause temporary or reversible health issues, the risk of serious health consequences is remote.
Lead is particularly harmful to babies and young children. Even small amounts can impact behavior, cognitive development, and academic performance, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.
The recall affects two lots of the baby food, sold in 4-ounce containers. The recalled items are marked with the following details:
