A 16-year-old girl from Alliston, charged with first-degree murder in connection to the death of a newborn baby, has been granted bail.
The girl’s identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. She is required to follow strict conditions, including remaining in the presence of a surety at all times. Bail was approved by a judge at a hearing held Wednesday at the Barrie courthouse.
A publication ban has been imposed on details from the hearing and any information that could identify the accused.
On November 21, 2024, at approximately 1:30 p.m., officers from Nottawasaga OPP responded to a call at an Alliston residence. There, they discovered the body of a deceased baby.
The girl was arrested on January 15, about two months after the discovery, and had been held in custody until her release into the care of a surety on Wednesday afternoon.
In addition to the murder charge, the girl faces a charge of performing an indignity to a human body. The charges were filed as part of a suspicious death investigation, which has since been ruled a homicide.
Police have not disclosed the relationship between the accused and the deceased.
All allegations remain unproven in court.
The next court appearance for the accused is scheduled for March 4 in Barrie.
