Last June, 12-day-old Jayden Mirville-Beamon was wheeled down a hospital hallway, his curious brown eyes scanning the surroundings. As nurses took him toward the operating room at M Health Fairview Masonic Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis, his family watched, tearful and hopeful. His mother, Somya Mirville, believed Jayden was silently reassuring them, as if to say, “I’ll be back soon, it’s not that big of a deal.”
Without treatment, Jayden’s condition was dire. A massive tumor had taken over 80% of his chest, pressing against his largest artery and shifting his heart to the right. This caused his lungs to struggle, preventing proper inflation.
Fortunately, Jayden’s medical team had a cutting-edge solution. They used virtual reality technology to create a detailed map of the tumor, which helped surgeons plan a precise approach for the delicate surgery ahead.
For Jayden’s parents, Somya Mirville and Eddie Beamon, the weeks leading up to the surgery were filled with grief and fear. The couple had only been able to hold their baby once before the operation, and the uncertainty of the situation weighed heavily on them.
“I try not to think the worst,” Somya shared in an interview. “But I couldn’t stop wondering, what if this was the only time I get to hold him?”
