by Jessica

SAN ANTONIO – A newborn baby is in critical condition after being found abandoned on a sidewalk early Tuesday morning, police said.

Around 3 a.m., a man discovered the baby near Nolan and Cherry Street, as snow began to fall, according to the KSAT Weather Authority Team. The temperature was 27°F, with wind chills making it feel like 16°F.

Police reported that the baby was found in a basket, wrapped in a towel, still connected to the umbilical cord, and breathing weakly.

The man immediately took the baby to the 400 block of Commerce Street, where emergency responders transported the infant to a hospital.

On Wednesday, SAPD officials confirmed that two women are being questioned in connection with the case. No charges have been filed.

Under Texas’ Safe Haven Law, parents unable to care for their newborns can legally surrender them at designated safe locations, such as hospitals or fire stations, within 60 days of birth. This law, also known as the Baby Moses law, provides a safe and legal alternative for parents in crisis.
