A recent investigation into a baby trafficking ring in Chania has stunned the community, uncovering a widespread illegal operation involving medical professionals.
Two gynecologists, one a renowned obstetrician-gynecologist and professor from Heraklion, and the other a doctor from Chania associated with a fertility clinic, have been arrested. These arrests are part of a broader probe into illegal adoptions and trafficking that came to light in mid-2024.
The investigation began after a raid in late August 2024, prompted by suspicions of illegal activities. During the raid, authorities found nine newborns, including several Australian babies, in a high-security neonatal ward at Chania Hospital. The Greek government secured the babies, and DNA tests were used to confirm their biological parents. The babies were then returned to their rightful families.
The investigation has revealed a range of illegal practices, including fake medical procedures, the illegal trade of genetic material such as eggs and sperm, and violations of donation laws. Over 500 fraudulent procedures were carried out, deceiving women about embryo transfers and genetic material storage. A total of 173 egg donors were involved, but only a few were officially registered, and in some cases, genetic material was sold to multiple couples. The operation generated illicit profits estimated between €1.6 million and €8.5 million.
As of January 20, four more individuals were arrested, bringing the total number of people accused to 18, including two key suspects who have been in custody since September 2024. Investigations are ongoing, with authorities focusing on gathering further evidence and exploring the potential involvement of others, including the fertility center at the core of the criminal activities.
