The Cecil and Irene Hylton Foundation has donated $2 million to help upgrade and improve the mother-baby unit at UVA Health Prince William Medical Center.

This generous contribution is part of a larger project aimed at renovating the unit and enhancing the hospital’s labor and delivery services to better serve the community.

As the region has grown, so has the need for healthcare services. The foundation has continued to support the community, and 20 years later, UVA Health remains a leader in providing high-quality care. The hospital is home to Prince William County’s only Level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

Erik Shannon, CEO of UVA Health’s community medical centers and clinics in northern Virginia and Culpeper, praised the Hylton Foundation for its ongoing generosity. “This contribution is a major boost for our patients and reflects the foundation’s commitment to making a real difference in our community,” Shannon said. “This donation supports our 10-year strategic plan to enhance and optimize our resources, helping us move forward in our mission to provide top-tier care.”

The donation is a key milestone in the project to upgrade the mother-baby unit. Planned improvements include:

Expanding patient care areas to handle increased demand during busy times.

Integrating advanced clinical technology and equipment, such as ultraviolet incubators and AI-powered diagnostic tools.

Enhancing patient safety, privacy, and security features.

Offering more personalized care by including doulas and birth coaches during labor and delivery, and increasing access to lactation specialists.

Improving the design and amenities of labor, delivery, and recovery rooms to meet the latest industry standards, which can lead to better patient outcomes and faster recovery.

Enhancing accessibility for patients and family members with disabilities.

UVA Health is also planning to expand support for families, offering more educational services, specialized childbirth classes, nutrition counseling, case management, social work, mother-baby enrichment programs, and perinatal depression screening. These services will complement the renovation, which is set to begin in 2025.

Dr. Felicia Blow, executive director of the UVA Community Health Foundation, expressed gratitude for the Hylton Foundation’s donation. “Philanthropic support has been crucial in building and now renovating this part of the hospital,” Blow said. “This donation ensures that our NICU remains a vital resource for our smallest patients.”
