St John directed further inquiries to the police.

Sources told the Herald that the situation left everyone “distraught,” with emergency services cordoning off the clinic as police conducted an investigation.

“Most likely, the clinic will be closed now,” the source added.

When contacted by the Herald on Wednesday afternoon, a clinic spokeswoman confirmed the closure, citing an “emergency incident.”

Police have since confirmed they are investigating the death after the child was taken to the medical facility in Manurewa.

“The death is currently being treated as unexplained while further inquiries are made,” a police spokesperson said.

“At this early stage, we are unable to provide further details.”
